Hundreds of kites, flying creatures take to the skies at Fest of Tails event

March 24, 2014

The skies over west Houston will be filled with hundreds of magnificent kites, some over 100 square feet in size, as the two-day Fest of Tails, April 12-13, returns to the master-planned community of Cross Creek Ranch.

Cross Creek Ranch is located just minutes west of the Grand Parkway at the intersection of FM 1463 and FM 1093.

Fest of Tails is free and open to the public.

The festivities kick off Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m. when professional kite fliers from Kites Unlimited launch giant-sized kites in the shapes of a lobster, frog, stingray and other creatures with tails extending more than 100 feet while kids of all ages can launch free kites available at the festival while supplies last. At 12:30 and 2 p.m., professional kite fliers will demonstrate kites controlled by multiple lines traveling up to 80 miles per hour.

While the incredible collection of kites and tails fly high above Cross Creek Ranch, tails of a different kind will be wagging closer to the ground.

The Houston Disc Dogs, featuring America’s Got Talent contestant Pam Martin, will perform their high-flying Frisbee-catching, dancing and skateboard acts at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Families can bring their leashed dogs to the Furry Friends Photo Booth from 1 – 4 p.m. They also can be entered in the Pooch-a Palooza Talent Show and the Pawty Dress Up Parade.

On Sunday, April 13, the giant kites once again will take to the skies from noon – 4 p.m. The Houston Disc Dogs will perform at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. while the Furry Friends Photo Booth will be open from 1 – 4 p.m.

Families also can enjoy local food vendors, music and entertainment, free canine Frisbees while supplies last and discounts on various services for their dogs. Plus, pets will be available for adoption.

While at the inaugural Fest of Tails, families can tour Cross Creek Ranch’s 12 new model homes, the largest fully furnished model home collection in the Houston area, from Lennar Homes, Newmark Homes, Plantation Homes, Highland Homes, Perry Homes, Trendmaker Homes and Village Builders. The west Houston master-planned community also offers custom homes from Avanti Custom Homes, Darling Homes, Huntington Homes and Partners in Building.

Families in Cross Creek Ranch enjoy the Cross Creek Ranch Adventure Island Water Park, a second resort-style pool, Flewellen Creek Park, miles of hike-and-bike trails along with winding creeks and lakes, a fitness center and sports complex with tennis, basketball and sand volleyball courts and playgrounds for all ages. The community also is home to the Flewellen Creek disc golf course and a one-acre Canine Commons Dog Park.
